Transportation

The principal means of traveling on the river is in boats designed and built for safety and comfort. Operated by experienced river pilots who also act as guides, these vessels make frequent stops at points of interest. One section of the journey requires a scenic overflight of the Yukon River by floatplane.

Shakat on the Yukon River

"Shakat; which means Summer Journey in Southern Tutchone and Northern Tutchone, is a most fitting name for Great River Journey’s first passenger tour vessel. We are most appreciative of the effort and care that was taken in its selection. Under the protocol established, each of our four First Nation partners will name one of the four passenger tour vessels that Great River Journey will acquire over the next two years."
– George Asquith, President

Other individualized transportation options—canoes, kayaks and small boats— are available for adventurous guests who wish to undertake parts of the journey “under their own steam.” Training will be provided and a riverboat will remain in close proximity to serve a crucial safety and support function.
